Are you man enough to walk a mile in HER shoes?!
The Rhode Island Crisis Assistance Center (RICAC) is asking you to “Put Yourself in Her Shoes™” this Saturday, September 12, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. on the Rhode Island Statehouse lawn. The event is an international men’s march in order to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence. Men will march through Providence in women’s high heels and women and children are also encouraged to join the march.
Nancy Rafi, executive Director of RICAC announced that Dr. Pablo Rodriguez, President of Women’s Care will be the master of ceremonies and keynote speaker of the event. Rafi stated that volunteers include Sergeant William Merandi and the Providence Police Department’s Special Victims Unit, a group of doctors from Pawtucket Hospital, the Rhode Island Executive Director of the Red Cross and the Rape Incest and Abuse National Network (RAINN) are getting involved in the event on Saturday.
This is the first time this event will be held in Rhode Island and proceeds from the sponsored walkers in the event will support the RICAC, a local non-profit agency that works with survivors of sexual assault, rape and domestic violence.
The RICAC website states that “one in six women will experience sexual assault in her lifetime…and one in 33 men are sexually assaulted.” Rafi stated “that means it could be your daughter, son, wife, sister, mother, niece, nephew or even yourself.”
